Why Conventions Can Help Your Blog Capability

Not long ago, I went to a conference about a topic related to my industry.  While I was there, I met several people who actually gave me some referral email addresses and such to try.  Not much has come of it yet, but I’m on somebody’s metaphorical radar now all the same.

I know what you’re probably thinking right now: travel?  In this economy? Surely, sir, you jest.  But no, I jest not!  For going to conventions can give you a lot of help in your blogging pursuits.

1. You make contacts.  Though nothing may ever come of these contacts, it’s never a bad idea to shake a hand and introduce yourself.  This helps to develop a network that can be helpful down the road.

2. You get exposure.  When you introduce yourself as part of the media, and get that press badge, you suddenly take on a whole new level of credibility.  You ARE the media.  it says so on your badge!  That makes people much more willing to talk to you.

3. You get tax advantages.  Let’s face it, folks, we’re all eager to keep the government’s hand out of our pocket, and travel expenses are a long-held deduction.  Be sure to talk to your tax professional for more information.

Add those all together and you get some good reasons to book a trip for your blog!

This is true. And also why I say "can". There is a little bit of "local advice" going on here. We've got bloggers all over the world, so some information may not always help everybody. But stay tuned–chances are we'll have something for the Croats soon. Actually, we've got quite a bit of good general advice here, so just go through the archives. You should find plenty of help.

More readers, and more targeted readers. That's exactly why I made the suggestion.

What conference did you attend, and how did you go about through the whole conference…was it just to try to network?

You forgot one of the most important benefits…..you can learn a ton. Say you go to a conference about blogging or internet marketing, the advice you get can seriously impact your business. The same goes for any other conference related to your niche. That extra knowledge is bound to help.

I usually go to the twitter conventions (when they are closeby) and its a great place to network and exchange info with other bloggers and social media people in your area.

I’m a big movie fan and I hope they will open to world wide soon. I browsed to Hulu.com and amazed with the variety of videos selection. Just can’t wait to watch those block- buster movies!

I think the benefits you list are not great enough to spend the money to take these trips. That money can be beter spent promoting your blog via the internet. Or maybe sending out postcards. It's all about getting the best bang for your buck.

I was in the same situation as you. I wanted to create a blog that was integrated into my main site with the same look and feel as the main site. I started with b2 but I found that even the simple templates very very complex and I could not get anything to work correctly. I switched over to wordpress and was able to modify a simple template (untheme-two-column) to get things working and looking the way I wanted.
