Here’s a quick reality check. If you want to make money online, the best way to start is by NOT starting a “make money online” blog!
A lot of people make the big mistake of starting a blog about “making money online” thinking that in the process they will make some easy money.Â
If I start a “make money online” blog, then I can easily make money from the blog! I just need to insert affiliate links everywhere, insert AdSense ads everywhere, sell text links, sell banners, write paid reviews, and all that good stuff I can do with it… right?
Wrong! First of all, yes it is possible to make some money from a MMO blog, but the reality is, there’s just so many out there that readers don’t have time to keep up with new ones. Also, here’s something you need to know when starting a blog about MMO (which I read somewhere but don’t remember where):
Over 75% Of All Your Readers Will Be Bloggers That Have Their Own Blog!
That’s 3 out of 4 people. What this means is that it will be harder for you to get clicks to your AdSense ads or your affiliate text links! Just think about it. When you visit a MMO blog that has AdSense ads, do you actually “fall” for them and click on the ads? I didn’t think so. You know about these things, and therefore, you try to stay away from them because you know exactly what they are for. But now let’s say you have a blog about “cooking” and is monetized by AdSense alone. You can plug in all the AdSense ads you want everywhere, and guess what? You will have a better chance of getting clicks to those ads than with a blog about MMO!
This “making money online” niche is too saturated, and the big boys are having all the fun. But if you still want to start one (or already have a blog about MMO), you will need to do some 500% more work than the big boys. Below are 3 tips and guidelines that will help you get to the top.
Make Sure Your Blog Doesn’t Suck
This is the most important thing when it comes to starting a new blog, whatever niche it might be in. But because you want to start a new MMO blog, you will need to make sure your blog is unique and doesn’t suck. Readers don’t like blogs that suck, you know.

If you want to take a short cut, I just want to let you know that it’s possible. It’s not recommended for new blogs because you will need to build up some credentials and trust first. But as soon as you have your momentum started and have at least 50 RSS/Email subscribers, you can do this simple trick to get instant popularity.

That’s funny mate, I ALMOST wrote an article about that today and changed my mind at the last minute
I agree, the MMO niche is completely ridiculous. I strongly advise bloggers who have ONLY a MMO blog to at least blog about something else and get in the real world! MMO niche is very strange and very saturated. I mean, most people start a MMO blog without even making money online…What? hehe
When I started frogstr.com I wanted to talk about Internet Marketing but didn’t want to get ONLY in the MMO niche so I decided to make the blog a lot more diversified. I do talk about Internet Marketing, but I also give blogging tips, web news and stuff like that. Still I find it to be a very hard niche compared to what I’m used too.
Good post mate!

Niche is important and MMO is very good if you realize those that you say…

I have also pointed out that thing about adsense in blogger and webmaser targeted traffic in my latest post
MMO niche is good if the blogger has really broad knowledge in that niche but if not and the bloggers just really want to make money from it and sharing non-sense things then it really sucks.
I am not on a MMO niche and just blogging my MMO journey. I don’t have enough knowledge with this but I’m trying to learn everything in this niche.

Blogging about your MMO journey is a great idea. I see a lot of blogs like this and I love reading them because I know that they are just blogging about they’re journey, and not trying to make money off of it.
By the way, good luck with your success!

The topic of this article has been discussed everywhere around the blogosphere lately yet even knowing it, many are still falling into the same trap. Well, without failures, where do we stand to win?
I agree with you that product niche converts better than MMO any day. Do they get the hint?

Hey Sly,

Later today I’ll be releasing a post on why you SHOULD start a blog in the MMO niche. Stay tuned.

I just checked out the post Gyutae, and it’s great. I do have to disagree on some points though, and it’s about “high profile recognition”. It’s hard for new bloggers to get recognized in this niche. Like I said in the post, they will need to work more than they need to if they want to be on top.

I agree - better to find a niche where people do a lot of searching and are searching for something to buy. I’m still looking for such a gold mine!

The broader niche of building websites for profit can be pretty effective, but to be honest I think hosting is one of the only useful products you can sell in the topic.

I’m just wondering, do you do any web host selling yourself? I was thinking about doing it, but went off on a different direction. I know many people that have a successful web hosting business.

Right now I’m just doing the affiliate thing since the companies are pretty generous with their commissions. I am definitely thinking that a web hosting business of my own would be a good expansion of that idea - but that is still someday out in the future since it requires an actual capital investment
It definitely appeals to me, I mean, I would have an excuse to buy lots of powerful computers and ultra-high speed internet connections.

Thanks fo the great post Sly. I am not in the MMO niche mainly because i feel the internet is over crouded with MMO blogs every corner you look and one has to go above and beyond the average to succeed in such super competitive niche also considering the fact that most MMO blogs don’t even make money.

Great points. If there is one blogging niche that is over saturated, it’s how to make money online. I remember reading Problogger.net in 2005, thinking, “this is a great blog topic.” Today, this arena is swamped.

I agree and dissagree whith this article. Yes everyone has one, but as John Chow says, put your twist too it. Of course if you make exactly the same one as everyone else, it won’t work, but if you are unique, and market it correctly, why couldn’t you get traffic of people that don’t already have blogs? People are always asking me ways of making money with online blogs, but don’t know where to look. You have to remember, just because WE know where all these great blogs and recources are , doesn’t mean that everyone else does. Market to users that don’t already have blogs, get them started, and away you go. My blog will promote comments. I hope to see you all there. The reason I myself am creating this is because people that associate with me know what they are doing, and if I create a site, and promote them to help awnser questions, your questions will be awnsered by the best. I’d like to know what you think of mine, it will be live on Friday. Please email me, thanks for posting, and I love your blog, and I hope you’ll like mine! (Remember guys click this after Friday)

You know, I’ve read and seen so much ‘Make Money Online’ blogs that it’s basically same rehash info again. Not a good place for a newbie marketer to go.
Heck, what’s mind-bogging is that I’ve read some sites and forums where newbies should start their own MMO blogs. Anyone seeing something wrong with that?
If the newbie is a newbie, and haven’t had much experiences into the IM industry, how can they really teach others?

It’s not that complicated. Its very simple. If you don’t rank well in Organic SERP’s, for niche marketing keywords and your content is not very unique your blog is going to suck.
