The State of The Blogosphere

The website, and blogging authority Technorati recently released their 2008 State of The Blogosphere report - you can read the full report at http://technorati.com/blogging/state-of-the-blogosphere/ There are no real surprises in the report, at least not for bloggers.

Blogs are here to stay - I think we all new that - this statement is in opposition to the almost annual media report that “such and such technology will be the death of blogs”.  These reports are usually written by journalists who are feeling the pinch as more and more traditional media outlets make cutbacks.

What I find interesting about this story, apart from the statistics (yes I’m a bit of a numbers geek), is the fact that Technorati is using the number to position itself as still being THE authority on blogs.  Far from being an piece of unbiased reporting or simply an observational piece based on statistics they opted to use the piece to show that the Technorati Authority index is still relevant and that getting a high ranking on Technorati should be the goal of any serious blogger.  What I find interesting about this is, the number of posts that were made last year by A list bloggers who basically panned Technorati as now becoming irrelevant and that the blogosphere was evolving at a rate that meant ranking sites like theirs were becoming redundant.

As Social Media platforms provide an ever broadening ability to publicize your blog, do sites like Technorati still play a part in your strategy ?
