Google Gears is one of those things that I believe everyone should be using, mostly because I think that everyone should be using Google Reader. Google Gears allows you to take information from a web app and save it on your hard drive. When Internet access is not available you can still access all the important information that you may need.
Currently there are three web apps that support Google Gears but I’m sure that number will grow over the next few months. Zoho Office, Remember the Milk, and Google Reader are the three apps that support it.
Zoho Office is an online office suite similar to Google Docs except that it supports Google Gears. So you can have the convenience of having all of your documents online smashed together with the convenience of having it offline. If you are going to be flying on a plane but would still like to edit some documents on the go, you can but don’t have to lose the ability to edit those same documents from any computer that you encounter.
Remember the Milk isn’t exactly my favorite web app, it is basically a list making application. It is a very simple way to make to-do lists. Whether that is for chores or grocery shopping Remember the Milk can do it. I personally don’t see any benefit to having Google Gears in Remember the Milk because I would much rather just use a notebook to make all of my to do lists but I’m sure many of you out there are already on Remember the Milk registering for an account.
The last application is my personal favorite, Google Reader. Besides the fact that it is probably the absolute best online RSS reader out there, it also allows you to access all of your feeds while offline as well. Now you won’t be able to download new posts while you are offline (that is just silly) but you will be able to get the same benefits of having a desktop RSS reader while gaining the ability to use it on multiple computers (including your cell phone).
Google Gears is one of my favorite add-ons for Firefox and I find myself using it all of the time. I suggest you go download it as well. Just remember that Google Gears is Beta software so it isn’t without bugs (I personally haven’t had a single issue with it). It is available for Linux, Mac, and Windows so I\’m going to take an educated guess and say that not one of you is going to be left out.
