Twitter expected to unveil advertising platform today

At SXSW, the currently undergoing conference and event in Texas, Twitter is expected to unveil its much anticipated advertising platform today, which is set to mimic Google’s Adwords in many ways.

Twitter has announced a lot of new features at SXSW, including a Geo-location feature. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.

Twitter adds new security features to combat phishing

Twitter has added new security features to its systems in order to fight an increasingly aggressive phishing threat. Twitter will scan each link for malicious destinations, as they put it in a blog post: “routing all links submitted to Twitter through this new service … even if a bad link is already sent out in an email notification and somebody clicks on it, we’ll be able keep that user safe.” For starters, Twitter will start using its own URL shortening service “twt.tl” for DMs and email notifications.

Internet Sanctions Lifted on Iran, Cuba and Sudan by U.S.

The U.S. has removed Internet sanctions applied to Iran, Cuba and Sudan. This means that restrictions for popular Internet companies like Facebook and Twitter are no longer in force and can be served to the said regions.

In a Senate hearing last week on Human Rights and the Law, a key issue discussed was the lack of access to U.S. Internet based applications.

10 billionth Tweet posted


Somewhere over the past few hours, the 10 billionth Tweet was posted on Twitter, at least according to the site Gigatweet, which looks at the ID number of each tweet, which usually corresponds the number tweet it is.

ExactTarget acquires CoTweet

ExactTarget, the email marketing software company, has announced that they’ve acquired CoTweet, the small startup which allows multiple members of a company to work on a single Twitter account.

CoTweet has raised a total of $1 million in Venture Capital, and will now be restructured to become ExactTarget’s “Social Media Lab” in San Francisco.

Tweeting Soldiers in the Military?

Here is something controversial and risky. For some reason, the Pentagon has allowed social media within its military ranks, claiming that Twitter and Facebook among others outweighs security concerns. Though this may be indeed beneficial, especially for the young service men, looming information leaks and security threats are feared from the said decision.

The new policy says commanders will still need to defend against cyber-attacks and block access to online pornography, gambling and sites promoting “hate-crime related activities.” Would this move be a wise one or just another bonehead idea?

Conan O’Brien joins Twitter, nets 400k followers in days

After the whole Tonight Show debacle between NBC, Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno, which resulted in Conan getting off the air and Leno getting his show back. Now Conan is on Twitter with a verified account, and he’s already got almost 400,000 followers.

His account is described as “I had a show. Then I had a different show. Now I have a Twitter account.”.

Twitter Ad platform rumored to launch next month

Despite it’s massive popularity and user base, Twitter still hasn’t got a real business model, and still relies heavily on the VC money it raised — and it raised a lot of it.

But according to new rumors, Twitter is set to launch its ad platform as early as next month, but there’s little concrete details, whether it will be regular banner/link advertising, or if it’ll be in-tweet ads.
