Google has announced that they’ve decided to shut down the online store for the Nexus One (which you can find at google.com/phone). The reason? Apparently carriers don’t like it when Google sells the phones outside of their system, and since Google offers a way for customers to pick their own plans, it was enough for Verizon to drop the Nexus One and offer the Droid Incredible instead. Google pointed out that the Nexus One will still be available through carriers.

According to new rumors at Neowin, Google’s Nexus One smartphone might be coming to Verizon’s network on March 23.

According to the source, which is an annonymous source from within Google, the phone passed FCC inspection for use on Verizon’s CDMA network, and the news will be unveiled at the CTIA Wireless convention in Las Vegas.

Google has surprised the attendees at the TED conference today, where it gave out a free Nexus One phone to everyone — all 1,500 people. What’s even better, the phones are unlocked. But considering that the tickets for the conference cost a whopping $6,000 USD, we’re sure the folks who can afford that can afford a few hundred bucks for a Nexus One.

Last year, Google handed out HTC Magic smartphones to everyone attending its I/O developer conference.

Google’s iPhone rival, the Nexus One, doesn’t appear much of a rival after all — at least not sales wise. The Nexus One has reportedly sold only 80,000 units during its first month, compared to the few million iPhones Apple sells each month.

When first launched, the iPhone sold about 600,000 and even the Droid, another Android device, sold around 500,000 units. However, both Apple and Motorola had adverting budgets north of $100 million when their devices sold, and Google has only spent a fraction of that.
