Facebook most popular site in U.S. according to Hitwise

Tracking and estimating corrects web statistics isn’t particularly easy, there are plenty of trackers — Compete, Alexa, Hitwise — each with their own systems and their own rankings. Google.com has long been known as the most visited site in the US, but now, according to Hitwise, it’s been pushed to second place, with Facebook now at the top spot. Yahoo Mail is third and Yahoo is fourth.

Internet Sanctions Lifted on Iran, Cuba and Sudan by U.S.

The U.S. has removed Internet sanctions applied to Iran, Cuba and Sudan. This means that restrictions for popular Internet companies like Facebook and Twitter are no longer in force and can be served to the said regions.

In a Senate hearing last week on Human Rights and the Law, a key issue discussed was the lack of access to U.S. Internet based applications.

Facebook 2010 revenues expected to be $1.2 to $2 billion

The Wall Street Journal expects Facebook revenues to break the $1 billion barrier this year, and the business news outfit estimates revenues of $1.2 billion to a stunning $2 billion.

Facebook has over 400 million users and is widely expected to file for an IPO this year, which will without a doubt make it the biggest tech IPO since Google.

Yahoo Contacts adds Facebook connect

Yahoo’s popular Contacts service has added Facebook connect as a standard feature now, and Facebook connect will almost take over the whole process now, with easy import of friends and their details from Facebook.

Last month, Yahoo added Twitter support as well, and we’ll see how much else they’re going to integrate in their systems.

Playdom acquires Offbeat Creations

Playdom, the social game company, has announced that they’ve acquired Facebook game developer Offbeat Creations. Playdom is more popular on the MySpace game market than on Facebook and is looking to expand more into the Facebook territory. Their most popular Facebook game, Mob Wards, has over 10 million monthly players. Playdom has raised $43 million in Venture Capital so far.

Tweeting Soldiers in the Military?

Here is something controversial and risky. For some reason, the Pentagon has allowed social media within its military ranks, claiming that Twitter and Facebook among others outweighs security concerns. Though this may be indeed beneficial, especially for the young service men, looming information leaks and security threats are feared from the said decision.

The new policy says commanders will still need to defend against cyber-attacks and block access to online pornography, gambling and sites promoting “hate-crime related activities.” Would this move be a wise one or just another bonehead idea?

Facebook Coal-Powered Data Center Facility Hit

While everyone is busy trying to improve on their carbon footprint, Facebook seems to be forgetting this call. This comes in the wake of reports that Facebook is planning to open a new facility Oregon that will be powered using coal power.

Unlike Google and Microsoft, it looks like Facebook may want to reconsider this plan. That is unless they are willing to risk tarnishing their image using environmentally harmful coal-power resources.

FarmVille named “Social Networking Game of The Year”

FarmVille, the utterly addictive Facebook game — and utterly annoying if you’re friends are constantly bugging you about it — has been crowned as the Social Networking Game of The Year at the 13th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards, which gives out awards to video games of all sorts.

Farmville attracts almost 80 million monthly players, and was up against PopCap’s Bejeweled Blitz, EA’s Restaurant City and Codebell’s Farm Town.
