Should You Collect Your Readers’ Email Addresses?

So I was reading an article over on Daily Blog Tips and one of their newest is about how to build an email address list based on your subscribers.  They describe it as one of the most important things an online entrepreneur can do.

I prefer to describe it as a kick in the metaphorical crotch to your readership, and instead say that building an email address list of your subscriber base is the WORST thing you can do as an online entrepreneur.

Now, admittedly, there’s something to be said for occasional messages to your readership that hit them where they live, in their email inbox about something special you’re doing or offering.  But without a LOT of care and forbearance, all you’ll be doing is alienating your readership and hurting the ones you depend on most.  And don’t even get me started on selling email addresses to affiliate programs….

So I wouldn’t be quite so concerned about the email address list, but that’s a call each person has to make for themselves.

I understand your point of view, but I think that you're making an assumption that the email you send to readers would not be of value. If you offer content that is of value, whether that is via RSS, email, or any other medium most will be happy to get more. Furthermore, email addresses should be collected in a way to ensure that readers want to hear from you. Obviously if they don't, they wont ask for more information.

I think collecting emails is good if the information you will send them is good, but if someone is collecting email for only spamming then its worst.

Kelli–value is subjective. You may determine it has value, your readership may not. Hit them with that email too often, and if they don't see the value, you'll alienate them. It's a very careful balance to be struck.

I agree with Paul completely. And those customers that do look at it the same way are forever lost when "spammed". Obviously, opt-in lists are another matter.

Usually I don't take the time to leave comments anymore, but this post contained so many wrong facts / ideas that I felt necessary to address them (also because it makes reference to my blog). So here we go:

    1. Quoting from the article: "Basically, Daily Blog Tips suggests that you collect email addresses and essentially spam your readership unmerciful with it."

Where the heck did you read that suggestion on my blog? What I suggested is that building email lists is essential. Period. Now spamming is not only a bad idea for a marketer, but it is also against the law.

What is my suggestion to do once you have an email list? To send content to those subscribers that is so good that they won't want to unsubscribe. To give value away, in other words.

That is what I do on my newsletters. I bet that if you ask any of my subscribers how they like the content I send via email, they will say they love it. I put better stuff there than I put on my blog most of the times.

That is my marketing strategy, to give a lot of value away for free, and then charge sometimes for value added products.

Again, where the heck did you get the idea I believe spamming is a good thing? You basically are stated on this post that I suggested people to do something illegal on my blog. This is a serious thing to write.

    2. Quoting from the article: "it’s LEGAL to relentlessly pour unsolicited email down the throats of people who provide you with their email address or otherwise make it publicly available."

You should check your facts as well. Sending unsolicited email down the throats of people is not legal at all, and if you do it in mass scale you could end up in jail.

When I talk about building email lists, I am talking about offering newsletters where people NEED TO DOUBLE OPT-IN to start receiving the emails. In other words, not only they need to put their name and email address and press a very clear button which says "SUBSCRIBE," but they also need to click on a confirmation email that is sent to them. Unless they do BOTH those steps they will never receive emails from me. So all email I send is actually with permission from other people.

Also, collecting emails in public places would be nuts as well. I would never do that.

I could go on, but I will stop here. You frankly lost all my respect with this post.

By the way, could you please remove the allegations you have on the post? Having your opinion is fine, everyone is entitled to one.

But stating wrongful facts about a person or company is called libel.

    Thanks a lot.

Yes that balance is difficult to achieve. If you can manage it though, it is extremely profitable. If you can get your readers' e-mail addresses and regularly contact them respectfully, you are opening up a new way to reach those people. If you keep reminding them about your blog, they are much more willing to become regular readers and keep coming back. Just because some people spam their mailing lists, it does not mean that you can't create a quality newsletter that is actually worth subscribing to.

Is this really worth it for all niche? I continue to hear and see that it's all about an email list, but it's very very hard to get this one going. Do you have any suggestions?
