Once Again Seth Godin Vindicates Me
So I was reading over at Seth Godin’s marketing blog–which is awesome, by the way–and back when I was talking about the idea of launching a business blog FOR YOUR CURRENT JOB, he busts out with this:
Offer a small bonus to anyone in the company who starts and runs a blog on any topic. Have them link to your company site, with an explanation that while they work there, they don’t speak for you.
Godin’s advice, which came at almost exactly the same time I was talking about how to convince your boss to pay you to set up a blog at work, is a little more broad than mine was (I figured it’d be better to run a blog about the company and its products and news, not necessarily ANY topic, but still!) but then his advice comes from a little more general purpose on getting the company an overall web strategy by making all the employees web-savvy. Or at least, sufficiently web-savvy to start their own blog.
So why wouldn’t a company want to take advantage of this sort of concept to get them some publicity too? No reason I can see.
So if you’ve been thinking about becoming a blogger in your spare time, now may be the best time ever to talk to your boss about it.

I couldn't see most bosses being willing to give a bonus for any type of blog. Most bosses would want to see more in it for the company. Still, it would be great if employees were encouraged more to do things like blogging. In almost any company there is bound to be someone who is less busy that may have time to help out with marketing in small ways like this.

Metal–remember, that advice came from a guy who was trying to get a company to be more overall web-savvy. A blog about anything becomes a training tool in that effect, so, in that capacity only, it'd be a smart idea to pay for a blog about anything. Because it's just to build up the employees' web skill.

My first website was a blog about the company I worked for. With 2 years I now run my own SEO company and make almos double what i did in my day job. The benefits of this aren't just for the business you are blogging about!

This is a excellent way to make some extra cash from local companies if you run a blog about your community. I think ccreating a blog about your local area is a niche that can be exploited for huge profis.

I'm just saying that most employers would not see the benefits of doing such. Most would simply see it as a waste of time. Personally I see how having web savvy employees could really help a lot of companies. Lately the media has been focusing on some employees getting in trouble over their personal blog or twitter account. I think this could scare a lot of employers away from accepting something like this.

Consider that the "trouble" most employees get into is WITH their employers, who think the blogs and tweets "reflect poorly on their image". Which it does, but it's not the employees' fault–it's the company's for not addressing the problems mentioned. Or at least that's my thinking on it.

Nice article. I also read seth's blog and Infact I like his advices when it comes to online marketing.
I can't say much about this topic because I don't work with a company now. But if ever I get to work in a company, a blog will be a boost for me and to my boss specially to the company.

I started my site as a hobby because it was my hobby, but what Seth Godin says is true as well for business blogs.

If employee will take enough interest after their blog and put some innovative ideas then it is going to help full to them.Where they can give some ideas about company growth which they can not tell directly to their boss.
