How to Automatically Send Direct Messages To New Twitter Followers

Posted on Nov 23, 2008 by Sly Guy

For those of you using Twitter, here’s a sly tip you might will find useful.

If you have recently followed me on Twitter, you probably noticed that you received a direct welcome message from me where I say thanks for following me.

Thanks for the follow! I look forward to your tweets. If you have time, feel free to visit my blog!

The thing is, it’s actually a pre-made message that gets automatically sent out to my new followers. A few of my new followers who figured out that it was automated are then asking me how I did that very sly trick.

So how do I do it? I use a service called TweetLater.

TweetLater

TweetLater’s main feature is for scheduling future-dated Twitter tweets. But my favorite is the automated thank-you feature where my new followers will automatically receive a direct message as if I had sent it by hand. It requires some setup on your part which takes a few minutes, but its nothing compared to the amount of work you have to do if you send messages out manually. It’s a good feeling to know that it makes the follower feel special for getting a direct message from me.

Well, there you have it folks. There are also other cool features from TweetLater, so don’t forget to check them out. If you liked this Twitter tip, don’t forget to follow me! I follow back everyone that follows me (which is actually also done automatically by TweetLater).

Hey… great news for twitters… I’m not a big fan of this but I can now see its potential with this new tool.

You’ve said it needs some setup… could you give more instructions on how exactly could this be done?

    I really like the “thank-you” note feature…

I don’t really want to explain it here because you’ll see the step-by-step directions anyway after you sign up for TweetLater.

    But the main points are:

    1) Enabling “email me when somewhere starts following me”.
    2) Set up email-forwarding from Twitter to TweetLater.

Not sure if I forgot something, but that’s basically it. :)

Yeah, I’ve seen this around for a while, I almost started using it a while back….I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it’s great…if you just send a general thanks….on the other hand, if you automatically start trying to sell stuff from the first response people will probably not follow you lol.

It’s a great service though, and they do quite a bit more than just the initial response, it’s worth checking out.

I agree with Joe, if you use this plugin for the correct reason you will benefit from it. Spamming in what not will get you no where. I’ve seen this plugin around for quite awhile and it looks legit. I might hook it up and try it out.

    Thanks for the info.

I think I tried this service with my old twitter account. I think I forgot to delete the old messages in there and not soon long after that account got banned.
I don’t think it was this service that got me banned but since twitter never gives you and exact cause why they bann I will never know.

I think it will be a good service for those who nwant to use it.
