Remember my post where I tell you, my readers, to stop lurking and start commenting? Well, here’s a follow-up to it, but for the bloggers out there. I know that many of you are bloggers with your own blog, and I also know for a fact that there are times when you are just lurking around the web and not doing anything. Let me tell you something… you need to get to work! Time is money (seriously) and with 10, 30, or 60 minutes of time that you waste, you could have done a lot of stuff!
So let’s say you spend 3-4 hours a day on the computer, doing whatever it is that you do everyday. And let’s say that you have spent 1 hour of that just lurking around instead of doing some work. Here’s what you could have done:
- Write posts for later. You could have written at least 2-3 posts that you can publish at a later date. It’s always a good idea to write drafts just in case the time comes when you can’t update on a particular day.
- Start a new PPC campaign(s). There are lots of money to be made through PPC marketing, and with 1 hour, you can make at least 10 new campaigns.
- Post on forums. Forums are a great way of internet marketing. Not only can you bring your reputation up on a particular forum, but you can also bring in traffic if you link back to your blog with your signature. Each forum post you make increases the chances of your blog being seen by other forum members. Digital Point is a great place to start, but there are others out there too.
- Submit posts to social networking sites. Social networking is a big part of internet marketing, and if you can do social networking, you’re already taking a big step ahead to success. You can submit posts from other blogs (as well as yours) to sites such as Sphinn and Mixx, or submit reviews to StumbleUpon. There are many other social networking sites out there, and you can surely do a lot in just a few minutes.
- Work on getting traffic. Traffic is important, and you need it. If you need ideas, here are 30.
- Make some quick cash. Site-flipping is hot, and you can start creating a site that you can flip later. Or if site-flipping is not for you, try domain-flipping. It’s easy, and you can easily make $50 in one day doing it.
- Write guest posts. You’re not John Chow or Darren Rowse who can literally get thousands of traffic doing nothing, so you need to find exposure for your blog as much as you can. Guests posts are a great (but not perfect) way of doing this since you are showing other readers from other blogs who you are all about and what you can do. If you have plenty of time in yours hands, write a few posts that you can submit to other blogs as a guest post. Then just contact a few bloggers and ask if you can submit a guest post on their blog. If they say yes, great. If not, then go ahead and try other bloggers.
There more things you can do, but these things are the things I do when I know I have to do some work to not waste time. Do you have any other tips?

This is a great post. It is my dream to work full time online and if I waste one hour a day that it another hour that I could have been using to work towards my dream.
I am getting closer but I believe I need to work harder (and smarter) in order to get there at the pace I want to (in the next 6 months).
Thanks for the posts

@ Sly - Post for later, that right there is the money maker my friend. I have recently over the last few weeks been cranking out 3-5 posts at a time for a handful of my sites, and let me tell you it really frees up time to be doing other things… like sleeping!
@ Ryan - Man, I see you everywhere except on my blog.. What’s up bro? lol I don’t come on yours either so I guess it’s give a little get a little.. you waiting for me to come by?

I have a post coming later today along these lines, but based on site flipping. What really irks me is when people who aren’t making money yet, spend hours commenting about “not making money yet” instead of working on making it happen. lol.
I notice these kids of motivational “get to work” posts coming out a lot lately from several bloggers. Is it an end of summer thing? Some kind of “back to school” fever….what? lol
Cheers!

There can always be ton of exceptions. Most of the bloggers are kids so oftentimes they have to dwell with schools and other stuffs. But then I agree, thats why they have a blog at the first place, its bcoz they are committed to it.

Great post!
I agree.
My most recent post relates to this.
We need to be movers and shakers, not lurkers who do nothing.
The more time wasted not being productive, the more productivity lost, and they go, “how come my blog sucks?”
Gees, I don’t know.
LOL!

That’s what I am talking about Sly! Good post and thanks for the kick in the butt. This seems to be a theme around the parts of the blogosphere that I am stomping in at the time being, but an important one.
Believe it or not, I wasn’t really hip to DigitalPoint, so I will be checking that one out. I know that I need to be getting on the forums to post as Honest Holly talks about. That is the book that I read lately and she mentions it many times, but I havn’t done it yet. I know, shame on me.
It took the Sly Guy to get me going!

I think as bloggers we waste a lot of time doing things that we really don’t need to be doing. Over the last couple of days I have decided to put more time into commenting blogs, and writing on forums to try and build my traffic back to the level it was.

@Ryan McLean - A goal of 6 months? I think that’s a goal that you can easily reach.
@Elijah - I need sleep too! And that’s why I love writing posts for later because I won’t have anything to worry about for that day.
@SuitJ - Hey man, don’t tell me you didn’t enjoy your summer!

@Melvin - Some do have commitment, and there are some that don’t. I know a lot of blogs out there that have been totally neglected. They weren’t sold, given to another user, or even erased. But to those that ARE committed, I give you guys and gals props!
@Luis Gross - I checked out your post and it’s great!
@PSD Rockstar - Ya, I heard a lot about it and I’m surely going to check it out.
@Freddie - Glad to have helped.
@Tom - Welcome back Tom!

Very very true, time is money. There are times when I spend a fair amount of time online and at the end of it have not done anything fruitful when I could have spent some of that time doing something that would have made me a bit of money. I will would have had some time to useless stuff at the end of it.
Thanks for the post.

I to so easy to lose focus and get distracted. I have to make a to do list everyday and revise it twice. I found it helps a lot if I break projects down by writing out a list of the steps too.

I like the way you get your points across! Yes, a lot of bloggers complain about lack of readers and or comments — can easily take up an hour on discussion groups! Their time may be better spent building traffic the old fashioned way. My problem lately is spending too much time surfing stumble upon and reading good posts like this! Time to get back to school!

i tend to spend a lot of time commenting on other blogs. mostly to try to bring in readers interested in my niche, as well as build backlinks for the blogs which turn out to not be no follow.

I like to write posts for later, especially since Blogger gives me the option to auto-publish posts at whatever date I want it to publish. This way if I’m busy and don’t have time to post on my blog on a certain day a new post is automatically published so my subscribers have something to read. I don’t know about WordPress but for those using Blogger, you have to go to draft.blogger.com in order to use this because it’s still in beta.
