WetPaint logoStarting and creating a wiki is always something that is a hobby to most people. Popularized by WikiPedia, more and more people now are creating their own wikis. Then there’s the Million Dollar Wiki where a business or anybody at all can purchase a wiki page for only $100. For only $100 you say? Well, to most of us, that’s too much. So why not just make your own in 3 easy steps… for free. That’s where the WetPaint comes in.

WetPaint is a really cool site I stumbled upon. First of all if you don’t know what a wiki is, read this page: what is a wiki? But after WikiPedia, you should already know what it is. Basically, a wiki is just a website where a group of people can (and should) help contribute and edit. Most wikis are complex to install and use. Meanwhile, WetPaint lets you make one easily without any hassle whatsoever. In fact, you can get started with your own in as easy as 1-2-3. Working with their service can actually make you feel like you’re working on your own blog. From adding content and sidebar widgets, to setting up RSS updates and email notifications, you can finish your wiki in no time.

So now you got your wiki done, but how do you actually get it up and running for the world to see? Well, you have two choices: get a subdomain from WetPaint ( ____.wetpaint.com), or set up the site on your own domain. Just like any other website, domain mapping is also just as easy. You don’t even need your own web hosting. There are also other WetPaint features that lets you do the things listed below:

  • Personal Profiles
  • Easy Photo/Video Integration
  • Page Level Discussion Threads
  • Customizable Page Templates
  • Lockable Pages
  • Site Statistics (Google Analytics and/or SiteMeter)
  • Clickable “Top Contributor” Photos
  • Site Search
  • Dynamic Page Organization
  • and more

If you want to check out what others are saying about WetPaint go ahead and visit their Press Room. There you’ll find all the latest news from WetPaint and testimonials from people and companies all over the world. While I was at that page, I noticed that WetPaint was included in Time magazine’s Top 50 Websites of 2007. Now that’s something for a pretty cool site with free service. All in all, WetPaint is a must for those who have a hobby that want to build a community around it. If creating and managing sites is not for you, wikis from WetPaint is the way to go.
