Twitter expected to unveil advertising platform today

At SXSW, the currently undergoing conference and event in Texas, Twitter is expected to unveil its much anticipated advertising platform today, which is set to mimic Google’s Adwords in many ways.

Twitter has announced a lot of new features at SXSW, including a Geo-location feature. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we know more.

Betaworks raises $20 million

Betaworks, the investment company which invests iWeb projects based around realtime Web, has announced that they’ve raised another $20 million from RRE Ventures and Intel Capital, DFJ Growth, AOL Ventures, The New York Times, Softbank Japan and Softbank NY — quite a round of important VCs.

This brings Betaworks’ total funding to $28 million. The company was launched in 2007.

Twitter adds new security features to combat phishing

Twitter has added new security features to its systems in order to fight an increasingly aggressive phishing threat. Twitter will scan each link for malicious destinations, as they put it in a blog post: “routing all links submitted to Twitter through this new service … even if a bad link is already sent out in an email notification and somebody clicks on it, we’ll be able keep that user safe.” For starters, Twitter will start using its own URL shortening service “twt.tl” for DMs and email notifications.

Internet Sanctions Lifted on Iran, Cuba and Sudan by U.S.

The U.S. has removed Internet sanctions applied to Iran, Cuba and Sudan. This means that restrictions for popular Internet companies like Facebook and Twitter are no longer in force and can be served to the said regions.

In a Senate hearing last week on Human Rights and the Law, a key issue discussed was the lack of access to U.S. Internet based applications.

10 billionth Tweet posted


Somewhere over the past few hours, the 10 billionth Tweet was posted on Twitter, at least according to the site Gigatweet, which looks at the ID number of each tweet, which usually corresponds the number tweet it is.

Facebook 2010 revenues expected to be $1.2 to $2 billion

The Wall Street Journal expects Facebook revenues to break the $1 billion barrier this year, and the business news outfit estimates revenues of $1.2 billion to a stunning $2 billion.

Facebook has over 400 million users and is widely expected to file for an IPO this year, which will without a doubt make it the biggest tech IPO since Google.

Yahoo Contacts adds Facebook connect

Yahoo’s popular Contacts service has added Facebook connect as a standard feature now, and Facebook connect will almost take over the whole process now, with easy import of friends and their details from Facebook.

Last month, Yahoo added Twitter support as well, and we’ll see how much else they’re going to integrate in their systems.

WordPress adds PuSH to its blogs

WordPress has just given a great, new feature to the over 10 million blogs it hosts on WordPress.com. The new feature, called PuSH, short for Pubsubhubbub, is a protocol to speed up RSS feeds and new posts.

From now on, when new blog posts are published, they are “pushed” to RSS feedreaders like Feedburner, instead of waiting for the reader to “ping” the blog.
