3 Simple Reasons Why I Removed Kontera In-Text Ads

I just want to let you guys and gals know that I have removed the Kontera ad system from this site! My decision to finally remove the Kontera ads should make everyone happy. I know I am. Who likes seeing those double-underlined words with pop-up ads showing up anyway?

Kontera In-text ad from John Chow

My decision was based on three simple reasons:

  • Low Conversions (not much money made)
  • Makes my site look “cleaner”
  • Plain, simple annoying

Many webmasters and bloggers I know agree to these simple reasons. A lot of people know that it converts low because many people just don’t click on them. Unless the person viewing your blog has no clue what the double-underlined words really are for, you pretty much can’t expect them to “fall for it”. I”m not trying to say that you should stay away from Kontera, but it’s just something that I know most people agree on. Then again, there are others like John Chow who have made a lot from their service and is one of their best blog monetizer. All I know is that removing Kontera from Slyvisions was the right thing.

Agreed, in-text ads were once a good thing to have, but now they are just plain annoying.

No offence to Mika from Konetra but Services doesn't have a W in it.

I agree sly the kontera ads have very low conversion, and are quite annoying to say the least.

    Good move I think

I have been running the idea of removing Kontera from my blogs as well. They seem to uglify a post with too many links making the other links in post look to cluttered.

The money I make from Kontera isn't much which makes me think I may do better with my affiliate links instead of Kontera links.

I think you made a great decision.

    I don't really mind Kontera.

I don't like popups appearing all over too. It makes a blog look messy.

I'm just waiting until I hit the minimum payout and then I'll be cancelling too. Low conversion and it loads slowly to often.

True, I cannot make much money from Kontera. How can Linkworth, they have this kind of ad too

As you mentioned, John Chow has done well with Kontera, but since we are not john chow, we cannot assume what works for him will work for us. I can only assume that different monetizing options work better for different volumes of traffic and different types of content. Canceling programs that do not work is very wise.

Wow, a public services manager from Kontera commented on this post? He can't even spell services. As for removing Kontera, I think it's a smart move. I've read pretty much all the guides about getting Kontera to work, and it's something that can't be forced. Seasoned readers of blog will NEVER, and I repeat NEVER click on those ads. As for the look; well I don't mind a couple of them on a page. Just not an excessive amount.

    Keep up the good work,

After Kontera changed their login page (about 2 weeks ago I think) and probably did some backend work, I've found my earnings have taken a nosedive and I'm considering removing them altogether. Compared to Adsense where many clicks in my niche can earn nice money, earning 2 cents a click is just not worth it. So it may be bye-bye time for Kontera.

Every (recent) month John Chow has recorded a flat payout of $1000 from Kontera. That's way too rounded and the same each month to be actuals. Are they just paying him to promote it? Anyone else get exactly the same, rounded dollar amount each month? Me neither.

I agree on removing that service, I feel like it clutters your website too much to be a viable option. It's more people getting frustrated than actually profiting off of the ad service. I don't know how John Chow is doing it, but maybe there is something to what Matt said.

I used Vibrant Media Intellitxt back in 2007, but removed it because of the paltry earnings.

Since I had seen Kontera on a few other sites, I added them to the lesser trafficked pages of my sites just to test them out.

So far, I'm not very happy with Kontera. The ads aren't that intrusive, but it definitely slows down loading time for probably 2 cents per click.

    I hope this trend improves!

Thanks for the post. I am gonna try kontera on a content travel related site above rather than a blog. Not too sure if there is a difference as a blog is like a forum in a way and season visitors are "immuned" to the ads and will not click them. Let's see how it goes .. cheers.

Plus, I heard kontera doesn't add-up your earning to the next month, if you're earning is below $5

I also removed Kontera from my blog, and basically due to the same reasons than you. I think the worst was the low conversion rate!
