Apple reveals iTunes 10, includes music social network “Ping”

Yesterday Apple didn’t just unveil a bunch of new iPods, they also unveiled the sparkling new iTunes 10, which includes a social network for music, one they call “Ping”, where artists and bands can come together, talk music, follow each other and what not. It’s a sort of MySpace/Last.FM/Twitter things, and from the looks of it, seems pretty decent. We’ll have to wait and see how it fares against its competitors.

Just as rumor predicted, Apple has announced a new Apple TV, and yes, it’s not called iTV as previously reported. The new TV is much smaller and is a streaming device only, meaning it has no internal hard drive. It will offer iTunes rentals and purchases, and as we reported yesterday, Netflix streaming. Apple hasn’t yet announced its new iTV, the replacement for Apple TV, and trusted reports are coming out that the new device will support Netflix, which isn’t surprising, considering that Netflix is pretty much everywhere these days. Apple will hold a media even tomorrow at 10AM PST, where it’s expected that new iPods and the iTV will be announced.

Google has been acquiring game developers like crazy during the last few months, and they’ve now made another acquisition: SocialDeck, which developers social games mainly for Facebook. The Canadian developer was founded in 2008, and has created several titles for Facebook and other sides, as well as iPhone games. SocialDeck will join Google’s team in Ontario, Canada.

According to new reports, Google is in talks with Hollywood studios to offer movie rentals on YouTube for $5 a pop as streams, which is a few bucks more than they cost on comparable services like iTunes. Google has been testing movie rentals a few months ago with a select few indie titles, and now the company is set to expand significantly. We’ll have to wait and see what kind of deal is struck with the studios.
